Logistics Specialist


The Logistics Specialist will manage the company’s cold chain global logistics activities, and Redwood City finished goods inventory / order fulfillment processing.  He/she will be part of the Supply Chain Operations team and the primary liaison with Order Management, Manufacturing Planning, R&D and Quality Control.  Additionally this person will have direct communications with customers regarding shipping activities and inquiries.  Key responsibilities will be ownership for timely and accurate order fulfillment execution, inventory control, shipping, and performance / cost tracking; assisting with the development of cost effective logistics processes and business strategies.  Help to drive process improvements within the order fulfillment and logistics areas; working closely with freight forwarders and internal partners.  Work on problems of diverse scope where analysis of data requires evaluation of identifiable factors.  Demonstrates good judgement in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions.  This position will report to the Associate Director of Supply Chain Operations.


  • Manage internal sales order (SO) fulfillment; accurately allocate/fulfill/pick/pack product against SO requirements
  • Move product and perform final cold chain pack out via dry ice or frozen gel pack
  • Prioritize and process sales orders, distribute shipping documents and arrange for shipment of temperature sensitive products to domestic and international destinations via FedEx, World Courier or other cold chain freight forwarders
  • Ensure effective management and navigation of international customs
  • Manage and direct SO on time shipping (OTS) and product delivery through interaction with customer, Business Development/Sales, Business Operations, external couriers, freight forwarders and customs brokers.  Proactively address problematic shipments to minimize delivery delays and cost
  • Ensure transactional accuracy and timely execution of Great Plains ERP system business and revenue requirements (PO receipt, customer sales order fulfillment / shipments, inventory adjustments, etc.)
  • Manage and oversee corporate R&D and QC cold chain shipping and receiving process
  • Challenge status quo, recommend improvements, implement and deliver results on measurable process efficiencies and cost savings
  • Develop relationships with peers and department leaders, understand how to add value and service to their team
  • Establish new tools and protocols to improve process efficiencies and  partnerships with internal and external stakeholders
  • Proactively establish and revise Codexis Supply Chain procedures and policies to drive business efficiency and provide back-up systems and redundancy for department absences  
  • Manage Codexis global product inventory through Great Plains ERP system.
  • Ownership for quarterly cycle count and inventory control process.  Reconcile book-to-physical inventory variances; identify root cause and implement corrective/preventative action
  • Support Sales team in preparation of proposals and quotes through understanding of Incoterms, shipping costs and international logistics
  • Manage relationship and interaction with Supply Chain partners such as FedEx, World Courier and VWR; responsible for VWR vendor managed stocking program for packaging supplies
  • Work closely with EH&S department to ensure relevant international standards for hazard classification and communications are complied with as it relates to material shipments
  • Manage and adhere to the company Record Retention Policy
  • Provide fully cross-trained backup for OM Specialist & Mfg. Planner for vacations, unplanned absences, etc.


  • BA/BS degree or equivalent experience
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in logistics and supply chain management role; cold chain shipping experience is a plus
  • Demonstrated International Shipping and Logistics understanding and expertise
  • ERP experience required; Microsoft Dynamics Great Plains system experience is a plus
  • Business and accounting acumen, exercise judgment on selection of methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results
  • Must demonstrate ability as a self-starter with proven ability to identify improvements, prioritize effectively, achieve commitments and deliver results
  • Intermediate Microsoft Excel experience
  • Flexibility in duty assignment and ability to work overtime, holidays and weekends as required
  • Ability to repeatedly lift 40 lbs.
  • Capacity to work with cross-functional teams and independently as needed
  • Requires wide-ranging operational experience; use professional concepts and company objectives to resolve complex issues in creative and effective ways
  • Possess a high level of integrity, curiosity, strong discipline, and a high degree of accuracy
  • Excellent communication skills, oral and written
  • APICS Supply Chain Professional Certification is a plus
  • IATA Dangerous goods certification is a plus
