Research Assistant or Associate

41 - Biochemistry - Redwood City, CA - Full Time

Codexis is a world leader in providing unique, state-of-the-art protein engineering and enzyme optimization services that can be applied in the development of biocatalysts for chemical manufacturing and to the generation of novel, therapeutically relevant biologic candidates.  Our proprietary CodeEvolver® protein engineering technology platform enables the rapid development of highly optimized proteins, custom-designed for our clients’ specific therapeutic or process-relevant applications.  This transformative approach to protein engineering starts with the end in mind: by understanding our clients’ product performance specifications early on, and evolving the protein to fit these requirements. As a result, we are continually developing biocatalysts and therapeutically relevant proteins in an effort to positively impact our clients’ ability to innovate in (pre-)clinical development and reduce costs in manufacturing.

Research Assistant/Associate, Biochemistry

Codexis seeks a highly motivated Research Assistant or Associate to join the Biochemistry Department.

We are looking for a Research Assistant /Research Associate with expertise in analytical method development and protein biochemistry. Successful candidates will be part of an interdisciplinary, dynamic and enthusiastic team responsible for implementing Codexis’ core technologies and delivering commercially-relevant and highly-evolved proteins.

Responsibilities include:

  • Assist with devising miniaturized biochemical assays to evaluate enzyme performance under application-relevant conditions (e.g., stability in various environments, reactivity rate, inhibition profile, selectivity, etc.).
  • Frequently adjust assays during the evolution process to overcome the constraints of the biocatalyst.
  • Express and test enzyme variants in high throughput and at larger scales. Perform shake flask fermentations, mammalian cell expression and recover protein catalyst through chromatography.
  • Analyze small molecules and interpret resulting data (e.g. HPLC, UV-Vis Spectrophotometry, GC and LC-MS and GC-MS).
  • Manage large data sets and communicate results to a multidisciplinary team.
  • Execute HTP screens in micro titer format.
  • Maintain a safe and efficient work place, follow safe lab practices and organize lab environment, order chemicals and stock consumables.
  • Keep diligent records and write reports and SOPs.

Job Requirements:

  • BS/MS degree in Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Bioengineering, Molecular Biology, Chemistry, or related field. 4+ years industry experience preferred.
  • Experience in enzymology, including enzyme kinetics, protein characterization, analytical biochemistry, and HTP-assay development.
  • Knowledge of recombinant expression in bacteria.  Familiarity with additional expression systems is desirable.
  • Experience in cell culture is desirable.
  • Demonstrated experience with analytical techniques and small molecule detection.
  • Familiarity/ interest in learning to operate lab automation equipment. Experience with Biomek, Tecan and/or other liquid handling systems desirable.
  • High level of flexibility and ability to work under tight timelines in a team setting.
  • Experience with LIMS and knowledge of statistics.
