Automation Specialist/Engineer – Biotech

Codexis, Inc. (Nasdaq: CDXS) is a protein engineering industry leader with successful track record of developing novel enzymes used as biocatalysts for the commercial production of small molecule pharmaceuticals, chemicals used in the food industry, and multiple other applications. Codexis has also applied its CodeEvolver® protein engineering technology platform to improve enzyme applications in the diagnostic field and to develop novel biotherapeutics for the treatment of rare genetic disorders.  

Codexis seeks an experienced Scientist with a strong Automation Specialist background to join the Research and Development department.

The Senior Automation Specialist will contribute to improving our research efforts by refining and expanding various automated methodologies across molecular biology and assay development/screening workflows.

He/She will implement hardware and software that control, integrate, and schedule various laboratory instrumentation and robotics. The successful candidate will understand projects in the context of the overall process and will be integral to their success by taking a leadership role in providing automation expertise.


  • Manage development, support, and deployment of new and existing automation systems on Codexis’s CodeEvolver® platform.
  • Identify, lead, and contribute to optimization projects to improve data quality, increase acquisition speed, and reduce failure rates.
  • Provide daily troubleshooting, maintenance, and validation of multiple integrated high-throughput instruments such as robotic liquid handlers, plate readers, PCR machines, incubators, plate sealers/de-sealers, etc.
  • Identify, translate, and apply manual lab practices into efficient automated processes in the context of on-going projects.
  • Advance and support existing next gen sequencing (NGS) operation.
  • Search, purchase, install, and validate new laboratory automation systems.
  • Continuously advance modular lab automation infrastructure to next level of quality and performance.
  • Integrate automated solutions and electronic systems (e.g. LIMS, Electronic Lab Notebook).
  • Translate high-level goals into action with minimal further guidance in a fast-paced and autonomous team structure.
  • Provide training and support for multiple users in a dynamic, cross-functional matrix environment.
  • Coordinate work across organizational interfaces and stakeholders.

Job Requirements:

  • BS or MS in Life Science, Chemistry or Engineering with a minimum 10+ years of direct and relevant industrial experience in operating automated instruments in Biotech R&D.
  • Advanced hands-on experience designing and implementing automated laboratory workflows including instrument configuration, method programming, and integration of peripheral devices.
  • Significant experience developing robust protocols for computer-controlled laboratory automation by minimizing machine variability.
  • Appreciation for the importance of efficient scheduling/prioritization.
  • Experience with device integration or scheduling systems such as SAMI.
  • Proficient understanding and application of programming concepts utilized in laboratory automation or various programming languages.
  • Experience with high-throughput assay development and screening, protein engineering and next gen sequencing (NGS) is highly desired.
  • Familiarity with barcode tracking and instrument data to LIMS integration.
  • Strong customer-orientation and experience in a customer facing role.
  • Willingness to travel in the context of technology transfer collaborations.
  • Self-starter who can operate with minimal supervision in fast-changing environment.
  • Broad knowledge of commercially available automation solutions and vendors.
  • Adept at identifying problems and designing solutions.
  • Experience communicating issues to instrument vendors, holding them accountable and resolving challenges collaboratively.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication (oral and written) skills, documentation, organization, good record keeping, writing reports, and SOPs.
  • Attention to detail, safety and good laboratory practice.
