Research Associate, Biochemistry

Codexis seeks a highly motivated Research Associate to join the Biochemistry Department.


We are looking for an experienced Research Associate highly proficient in analytical method development and protein biochemistry. Successful candidates will be part of an interdisciplinary, dynamic and enthusiastic protein engineering team responsible for implementing Codexis’ core technologies and delivering commercially-relevant and highly-evolved proteins.


Responsibilities include:

  • Assist or lead assay development to evaluate enzyme performance under application-relevant conditions
  • Adjust assay parameters during the evolution process to reflect desired process conditions and ensure a good dynamic range of the assay
  • Express and test enzyme variants in high throughput, and execute enzyme assays in micro titer format
  • Evaluate activity of enzyme variants by identifying and quantifying small molecules products, using HPLC, UV-Vis Spectrophotometry, GC and LC-MS or GC-MS
  • Manage large data sets and communicate results to a multidisciplinary team
  • Grow cultures in shake flask-scale, generate protein powders
  • Maintain a safe and efficient work place, follow safe lab practices and organize lab environment, order chemicals and stock consumables
  • Keep diligent records and write reports and SOPs


Job Requirements:

  • BS with 4 years of relevant experience or MS degree with 2-4 years of experience in Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Molecular Biology, Chemistry, or related field
  • Experience in protein biochemistry/enzymology, including enzyme kinetics, protein characterization, directed evolution, analytical biochemistry, and HTP-assay development
  • Knowledge of recombinant expression in bacteria.  Familiarity with additional expression systems is desirable
  • Experience with analytical techniques and small molecule detection
  • Familiarity/ interest in learning to operate lab automation equipment (i.e. Biomek, Tecan and/or other liquid handling systems)
  • High level of flexibility and ability to work under tight timelines in a team setting.
  • Experience with LIMS and knowledge of statistics desirable
  • Strong basic computer skills.  High proficiency in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication (oral and written) skills
  • Excellent documentation, organization and record keeping skills
